ART 1010-Introduction to Art

Course Description: Includes identification of major art forms, brief survey of art history, investigation of art criticism, introduction of various media, and identification of elements and principles of art for all on-campus courses. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Formulate a working knowledge of the elements and principles of art and design and how these things, when combined with the unique qualities of different media, contribute to the meaning and message of art. 2. Acquire the vocabulary necessary to address issues and concepts in art using both oral and written skills. 3. Broadly define movements and periods in art history and to locate works of art within their historical and cultural contexts. 4. Differentiate between viewing a work of art emotionally and applying analytical techniques to interpret art. 5. Access, interpret, evaluate and synthesize information using multiple resources, including physical libraries, online information and art databases. 6. Explore how and why works of art can influence human experiences, making connections between art, culture and everyday life.

ART 1110-Drawing and Composition

Prerequisites: None
Course Description: Studio class for Art students and others interested in drawing. Stresses fundamentals of image-based drawing, creativity, and elements of composition, using various techniques with black and white and color media in order to develop drawing skills in preparation for further Art study. Fulfills prerequisite to Art 2110. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Produce consistently purposeful variations in line quality. 2. Demonstrate consistent accuracy in drawing perspective, shape, and value. 3. Express knowledge of basic drawing techniques and principles of composition. 4. Differentiate between accurate and inaccurate shapes both orthographically and in perspective.

ART 2060-Digital Photography

Prerequisites:  None
Course Description: An Introduction for all students to the history, mechanics, and applications of digital photography as well as basic photographic techniques and compositional skills. Course objectives will be met through a combination of lectures, viewing the work of master photographers, class assignments, in-class critiques of student work, and time spent outside of the classroom shooting as a group. Each student must have access to a digital camera with manual modes. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the visual and written discourse of photography history and practicality of digital photography and apply this to the evaluation of photographs as an art form and aesthetic sense. 2. Create digital photographs by applying the basics of digital camera operation, by using the camera as a tool for creative expression and visual thinking, and by manipulating formal elements to achieve better compositions. 3. Design exhibition-quality photographs through employment of craftsmanship, critiques, and professional presentation.

DANC 1010-Dance in Culture

Course Description: A beginning theoretical course examining societal diversity and artistic expression across cultures through the art of dance and body movement. Designed to introduce the definition of dance, basic history of dance and different genres of dance to enable students to make certain critical analyses and to identify style, form, technique and individuals who have made significant contributions in the dance field. Increase participants’ capacity to enjoy the art of dance and to appreciate the great variety of dance and diversity of culture in human society. Taught through lecture, discussion, practice sessions, and video observation. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Articulate the relationship between the arts and society. 2. Identify specific artists and influential figures, their work, and the style, periods and historical context of their creative work. 3. Reflect and articulate one’s experience as a patron of the arts. 4. Reflect and articulate one’s experience as a participant in a variety of dance genres and cultural dances. 5. Examine differences and similarities within (or) across cultures and how they are reflected in dance. 6. Discuss the concept of “what is dance”. 7. Examine the role of social factors, e.g., race, gender, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, religion, etc., in shaping social interaction, cultural worldviews, and individual identity as reflected through dance. 8. Analyze and synthesize research-based information in order to articulate how dance serves as a representation of cultural values.

MUSC 1010-Introduction to Music

Course Description: An introductory survey of the elements, style periods, and standard repertoire of Western traditional art music. Emphasis given to improving the student’s listening skills. Includes lecture, demonstration, and discussion of representative musical examples and historical background on composers and musical genres. Assignments may include attendance at specific concerts, written projects, and individual listening. Students who successfully complete this course will gain a broader knowledge of musical elements and how they are characteristically used in each major style period, along with developing better listening skills through perception, understanding, and practice. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the basic elements of music. 2. Identify the principal types of vocal and instrumental compositions. 3. Compare characteristics of music and composers in Western society from the Medieval Period through the present day. 4. Critically evaluate and appreciate musical compositions and performances through listening to music.

THEA 1013-Introduction to Theatre

Prerequisites:  None
Course Description: Emphasizes the appreciation skills needed to become a discriminating audience member of live theatre, including producing, play writing, directing, acting, designing and critiquing. Students must attend live theatre productions, and textbook readings, lecture, audio/ video, demonstration, discussion, quizzes, tests, and exercises are also used. Students are required to attend live Dixie State University theatre productions. Successful completers will be more discerning and sensitive theatre audience members. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the connections between the theatrical arts and society, and is able to articulate those relationships. 2. Understand and articulate the theatrical artistic process, and the elements and forms of artistic endeavors. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of specific artists, their work, and the style, periods, and historical context of their creative work. 4. Enhance the ability to assess personal efforts in the arts.
